FOUNDATION FOR YOUNG AUSTRALIANS

THE NEW WORK REALITY https://www.fya.org.au

Today's generation of young people is the first to be worse off in relation to their parents on a number of key social and economic measures.

By the age of 25, only half of young Australians have been able to secure more than 35 hours of work per week, which would classify them to be full-time employed (Australian Bureau of Statistics definition).

Today's 15 year olds will likely navigate 17 changes in employer across 5 different careers.

Traditional full-time work is becoming increasingly out of reach for young people today. This challenge only continues to grow, as automation, globalization and, more flexible working arrangements, reshape our economy and work.

Despite higher levels of education attainment, with nearly 60% of 25 year-olds holding a higher level of education than secondary school, entering the full-time workforce is proving a significant challenge for this generation and also, for Australia.

Young people, in order to be prepared and equipped to navigate the new work reality, need ENTERPRISE SKILLS (e.g. transferable skills such as problem solving, communication, teamwork, and creativity) as well as TECHNICAL SKILLS (e.g. skills specific to a task, role or industry, and can include qualifications such as certificates and licences).

There are significant implications for young people's transition due to precarious employment, for example, the possible difficulties in making steady superannuation contributions, in accessing mortgages or other financial services, and they may not have access to carers or annual leave.

Increasingly, numbers of young people work "full-time hours" in either casual employment or by juggling multiple jobs.

Young people need a portfolio of skills, knowledge and attitudes that will expand and deepen over time and become highly portable across many jobs and sectors. Education focused on technical and foundational skills must also include enterprise skills that are required for the future of work.

  7. HSC VS ATAR = PERFORMANCE VS POSITION.

  • HSC Marks are about a student's performance against the standards
  • The ATAR is about a student's position against all other students in NSW
  • The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) is a NUMERICAL MEASURE OF A STUDENT'S OVERALL ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN THE HSC EXAMS IN RELATION TO THAT OF OTHER STUDENTS
  • The ATAR is a number between 0.00 and 99.95
  • Reported, only, are ATARs above 30.00
  • Universities use the ATAR to rank and select school leavers for admission to university
  • To be eligible for an ATAR a student must have satisfactorily completed at least 10 Units of ATAR courses, including at least eight Units of Category A courses, 2 Units of English, 3 courses of 2 Units or greater and 4 subjects
  • The ATAR is based on an aggregate of SCALED MARKS in 10 UNITS of ATAR COURSES comprising the best two Units of English, and best 8 remaining Units (which can include up to 2 Units of Category B courses)
  • A Student's position in a course depends on how good they are at that subject AND the strength of the competition
  • No student is advantaged or disadvantaged because of his or her subject choice. The only thing that can scale a student up or down, is his or her own performance, NOT THE COURSE ATTEMPTED, and NOT THE SCHOOL ATTENDED.
  • It does not matter what course a student studies, it is a matter of doing well in that course

Opportunities for girls to be involved in practical, hands-on work experience in trades, encouragement to keep up STEM studies, a mindset to consider ALL types of careers, their career progression and potential earnings, need for bringing parents on board to consider alternatives?
